We've been having several discussions recently around bookings and some of the relating articles we've found are well worth a read. This one discusses how 2015 was a record year for bookings through global distribution systems, the channel used when guests book through traditional travel agents. Surprising? Apparently it was predicted that travel agent bookings were bound to decline.
As large as the hotel industry has become and as steady as it has grown over the years, the technology powering it has not kept pace. Innovation has come from companies focusing on the consumer side of travel.
Although OTAs ranked higher than hotels when it came to "influence of interaction on satisfaction with a brand" as well as "using/buying the brand", the hotel sector came on top when consumers were asked which organisations they trust.
The hotel industry is urging the U.S. government to reject the proposed merger between Expedia and Orbitz Worldwide, arguing the combined company would control the online booking market and be able to impose higher costs on the industry. The Justice Department is reviewing the $1.3-billion transaction, which was announced in February and came just weeks after Expedia completed a takeover of another online travel site, Travelocity.
The surge in visitors from Tourism New Zealand’s key international markets continues with holiday arrivals the highest ever for the month of June and total annual arrivals peaking, just short of three million international visitors.
Figures released today by Statistics New Zealand show total visitor arrivals for the year up nine per cent and holiday arrivals up 10 per cent, compared with the same period last year.
